How to Buy a Second-Hand Herman Miller: What to Check Before You Commit - thegoodchairs

A well-maintained pre-owned Herman Miller is one of the smartest purchases you can make in premium office seating. These chairs are built to last twenty years or more, they hold their ergonomic function almost indefinitely when properly cared for, and the secondhand market offers them at a fraction of new retail prices. A genuine Aeron in good condition bought pre-owned will outperform a brand new budget chair every single time.

But the secondhand market also has genuine pitfalls. Counterfeits exist. Worn components are easy to miss if you do not know what you are looking for. Listings frequently omit the size, the configuration, or the generation of the chair. And the wrong size Aeron is almost as useless as no Aeron at all.

At The Good Chairs, we inspect every chair we source before it reaches a buyer. This guide shares exactly what we look for, so you can apply the same standard whether you are buying from us or anywhere else.

Step one: confirm it is genuine

This matters more than most buyers realise. Fake or "inspired by" Aeron chairs flood online marketplaces, and these replicas may look similar but lack the engineering, durability, and comfort of the original.

The authenticity checks are straightforward. The Herman Miller logo should be embossed directly into the backrest spine bracket, not printed on a sticker. There should be a manufacturing label on the underside of the seat pan listing the model, size, revision, colour code, and manufacturing date. A genuine Aeron will have a laser-etched serial number tag on the bottom of the base. If the serial number is missing, printed on paper, or does not match Herman Miller's format, treat it as a red flag.

Original Aeron chairs feature characteristic design elements that counterfeits frequently overlook, including the fluid curvature of the backrest, uniform Pellicle mesh tension across the surface, and a smooth rounded waterfall profile at the front seat edge. If the mesh looks coarse, inconsistent, or loosely tensioned, it is worth scrutinising further.

Step two: identify the generation

The Aeron has been in production since 1994 and went through its most significant update in 2016. Knowing which generation you are looking at affects what you should pay and what to expect.

The Classic Aeron (produced before October 2016) uses the original Pellicle mesh with uniform tension across the seat and back. The Remastered Aeron uses 8Z Pellicle, which has eight zones of varying tension — softer under the hamstrings and behind the shoulder blades, firmer where the sitting bones and sacrum need support. In practice the Remastered mesh feels more responsive and distributes weight more evenly.

The Remastered also has a slimmer mechanism, a more uniform colour, and smaller, less noticeable adjustment levers. The Classic has a slightly more industrial appearance and used more aluminium in its construction, making it heavier but arguably more robust in the base and frame.

Both generations are worth buying. A Classic in excellent condition is a sound purchase. A Remastered in equivalent condition will generally be worth a modest premium due to the improved mesh and updated PostureFit SL lumbar system.

Step three: confirm the size

This is non-negotiable. The Aeron comes in three sizes (A, B and C) and the wrong size will not function correctly regardless of its condition. The easiest way to confirm the size is to feel under the top lip of the backrest frame, directly behind the Herman Miller logo. One bump indicates size A, two bumps indicate size B, and three bumps arranged in a triangle indicate size C.

Always cross-check this against the label on the underside of the seat. Many online listings state the wrong size, either through error or because the seller does not know. If a listing does not specify the size clearly, ask before doing anything else. See our dedicated Aeron sizing guide for the full height and weight recommendations across all three sizes.

Step four: inspect the Pellicle mesh

The mesh is the heart of the Aeron and the component most likely to show meaningful wear over time. Run your hand across both the seat and the backrest. The mesh should feel evenly tensioned with no sagging, looseness, or areas that feel softer than others. Any visible tearing, fraying at the edges, or stretched sections where the mesh has begun to separate from the frame are signs the mesh needs replacing.

A replacement Pellicle mesh from Herman Miller costs in the range of $200 to $300 AUD for parts alone, plus labour if you are not replacing it yourself. This is a known and manageable repair, but it should be reflected in the purchase price.

Step five: test every mechanism

Sit in the chair and work through every adjustment point methodically.

The gas cylinder should raise and lower smoothly with no sudden drops or resistance. If the chair sinks slowly while you are sitting in it, the cylinder is failing and will need replacement. A new cylinder costs approximately $100 to $150 AUD.

The tilt mechanism should recline smoothly through its full range with the tension knob responding progressively. A grinding, clicking, or metallic sound during recline is a meaningful red flag. A well-maintained Aeron should feel tight, responsive, and stable even after ten years of use. If it creaks or wobbles, something is worn.

The PostureFit SL or lumbar support should move freely when adjusted. On the Remastered, check that both the sacral and lumbar pads make firm contact with your back in a neutral seated position.

The armrests should adjust smoothly and hold their position once set. Inspect the arm pads for scratches and surface wear, and check that there are no strange noises when adjusting height or pivot.

Step six: inspect the base and casters

Place the chair on a flat surface and check the five-star base for any cracks, particularly around the points where each arm meets the centre hub. A cracked base is a safety concern and is expensive to source as a replacement part. The base should sit completely flat with no wobble.

Roll the chair in each direction. The casters should move freely and quietly. Worn or seized casters are an inexpensive fix but worth noting.

Step seven: check for cosmetic issues that matter versus those that do not

Not all wear is equal. Surface scuffs on the plastic frame are cosmetic and do not affect function. Minor discolouration on the mesh from UV exposure is cosmetic. Small scratches on the aluminium base are cosmetic.

What is not cosmetic: any crack in the plastic frame or base, any looseness in the backrest attachment points, any arm that wobbles or does not lock in position, and any adjustment lever that moves freely but does not hold its setting.

What to pay

Pricing for pre-owned Herman Miller Aerons in Australia varies considerably depending on condition, configuration, and generation. As a broad guide, a well-maintained Remastered Aeron in size B with full adjustability should sit somewhere between $600 and $1,000 AUD from a private seller, and between $800 and $1,200 AUD from a specialist dealer who has inspected and prepared the chair. A Classic Aeron in equivalent condition should be priced modestly lower. Anything priced below $400 for an Aeron warrants extra scrutiny on authenticity and condition.

Why buying from a specialist matters

The original 12-year manufacturer's warranty is only valid to the original purchaser and does not transfer on resale. Most pre-owned Aerons are sold without any warranty at all. When you buy from a specialist dealer rather than a private listing, you are paying partly for the inspection work that has already been done, partly for accountability if something is misrepresented, and partly for the confidence of knowing the chair has been assessed by someone who handles these chairs regularly.

At The Good Chairs, every pre-owned Herman Miller we stock has been through the same inspection process described in this guide. If anything does not meet our standard, we do not list it.
