Conceived by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958 for a private residence in Columbus, Indiana, USA, the Aluminium Group chair departs from the moulded seat-shell approach. A single panel of fabric or leather is tensioned between two aluminium side members to form a taut yet elastic seat that conforms to the body without conventional upholstery. This is ICF production with the characteristic aluminium framing and suspended upholstery.

Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958, the Aluminum Group began not as office furniture but as elegant seating for a private home commissioned by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. The Eameses suspended a single panel of fabric or leather between two slim aluminium ribs, creating a seat that contours to the body without any visible padding or frame.
More than sixty years on, it remains one of the most recognisable chairs ever made and is still produced by Herman Miller today.
