Very hard to find and sought after light tan (brown) leather mid 20th century Soft Pad Aluminium Group Chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller in excellent vintage condition. Purchased new in the 1970's, they spent the first 50 years of their life cosseted in the board room of a legal chambers in Liverpool, England. The chairs rotate 360 degrees and have removable floor glides. A well-built, extremely comfortable chair. Charles and Ray Eames developed the Eames Soft Pad chair in 1969 as a luxury version of their Eames Aluminium Group chairs. Introduced in 1958, the Aluminium Group was a special project by Charles and Ray Eames for a private residence being designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard for Cummins Engines founder J. Irwin Miller in Columbus, Indiana. At the time, the furniture was called the "leisure group," or "indoor-outdoor group" since it was meant to address the lack of quality outdoor furniture on the market. Herman Miller began making the Aluminium Group chairs in 1958, and they have been in continuous demand ever since. The Eames Soft Pad — the Aluminum Group, made plush
Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1969, the Soft Pad Group took the celebrated Aluminum Group and softened it. The same elegant aluminium side ribs remain, but in place of the taut single panel sit individual cushioned 'soft pads' in leather or fabric — buttoned to the frame for a richer, more upholstered feel without losing the original's clean profile.
